News   Barrington's Musical Theatre Lab Series to Include Calvin Berger and Funked Up Fairy Tales

The second season of Barrington Stage Company's Musical Theatre Lab series will kick off June 26 with Calvin Berger.

With book, music and lyrics by Barry Wyner, the new musical will play through July 14 at the Berkshire Athenaeum in Pittsfield, MA. Directed and choreographed by Stephen Terrell, the musical is a modern retelling of Cyrano De Bergerac.

Set in an American high school, Calvin Berger, according to press notes, concerns "Calvin Berger [who] is too insecure about the size of his nose to ask out the girls of his dreams. Calvin communicates with her through the handsome new kid in school. The result is a hip heartfelt new musical comedy to delight audiences of all ages."

Funked Up Fairy Tales — penned by The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin's Kirsten Childs will follow, playing July 31-Aug. 11. Directed by Kevin Del Aguila, the new musical is described as a "twisted take on classic [fairy] tales."

A third musical — to be announced at a later date — will run Aug. 14-Sept. 1.

Tony Award winner William Finn (Falsettos, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) is the artistic producer of the Musical Theatre Lab series. Julianne Boyd is the artistic director of the Barrington Stage Company. The Berkshire Athenaeum is located at 1 Wendell Avenue in Pittsfield, MA. Tickets, priced $25-$35, are available by calling (413) 236-8888 or by visiting www.barringtonstageco.org.
