Luhrmann told The Hollywood Reporter at the New York premiere of "The Great Gatsby" he hoped Hamlet would be his next collaboration with DiCaprio, saying, "To me, Gatsby is the American Hamlet. What else could we possibly do as a follow-up?"
Lurhmann directed DiCaprio in "Romeo + Juliet" in 1996 before the two collaborated on his most recent film, "The Great Gatsby."
One of Shakespeare's most famous plays, Hamlet has been adapted for film several times, most recently in a classical adaptation starring Kenneth Branagh and a modern adaptation starring Ethan Hawke. Older film versions include a 1948 one starring Laurence Olivier and a 1964 production starring Richard Burton filmed in front of a live audience.
