Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz’s musical Be More Chill will be licensed for theatrical productions by R&H Theatricals, a division of Rodgers & Hammerstein, the company announced. In celebration of the announcement, a new music video of “Michael in the Bathroom” from the show, starring original cast member George Salazar, is now available. Watch it above.
The new video features footage from the show's debut production, as well as the cast and creative team in the studio.
Based on the novel by Ned Vizzini, Be More Chill is a musical about high school, popularity, and a tiny supercomputer that may just be the answer to a teenager’s dreams. The show had an extended world-premiere run at New Jersey's Two River Theater in 2015.
To coincide with the licensing news, R&H Theatricals is launching a “Michael in the Bathroom” contest, which will award a complimentary theatrical license of the musical for a school production. To enter, record yourself, your choir, musical theatre group, or music ensemble singing your version of “Michael in the Bathroom“ from the musical. Upload the video to Youtube and register it at RNH.com/BeMoreChillContest.
The world premiere of Be More Chill was directed by Stephen Brackett with Chase Brock as choreographer. The orchestrator and musical supervisor was Charlie Rosen; the musical director was Nathan Dame; and music copyist was Paul Rigano.
The Be More Chill cast album was produced by Kurt Deutsch, Joe Iconis, and Charlie Rosen. It currently sits at No. 12 on the Billboard Broadway chart. Click here to order the original cast recording from Ghostlight Records.
