A Chinese version of classic French play Doctor Knock will soon premiere at Beijing's Capital Theatre.
Knock , written in 1923 by the famous French poet, novelist and playwright Jules Romains, has had more than 1,400 performances in countries such as France, Austria, and Germany. It has also been adapted for film three times.
The hero "Knock" of France, is the typical "quack" doctor. The play satirizes the tricks of swindlers and the credulity of the masses, and reveals the false promise that "thinking leads the world".
Famous translator Guo Hong'an commented that Knock was a "comedy with some coldness. It arouses not only laughter, but also thinking, a kind of tragic thinking after laughing."
The play stars Jiang Wen, one of the most prominent actors in China. He demonstrated his extraordinary talent as an actor when he was only 17, when an expert, after watching his performance in a minor role, said, " China will soon have a big star!". After graduating from Central Academy of Drama, Jiang devoted himself mainly to film and TV. His acting won him several national prizes, and he has also directed. However, few people have seen Jiang on stage, though he had been trained as a stage actor. This time, Jiang's return to stage will surely enhance the play. Knock is directed by Wei Xiaoping. The cast also includes Liu Wei ,Cao li, etc.
Knock runs 7:00pm Jan.16-18 at Capital Theatre, No.22, Wang Fu Jing Street, 7:15pm Jan.20-26 at Haidian Theatre, No.84, Haidian Road.
