A tortured writer struggling through the novel-making process is at the center of Nick Bellitto's new dance play, Novel, ending its world premiere Dec. 23 at off-off-Broadway's HERE Arts Center. Performances began Nov. 30. Lorca Peress (Variations on Christopher Street, Mail) directs.

In Novel, Adam Reynaud sequesters himself in his publisher's cabin in the woods to write his book. He works on a semi-autobiographical tale of a man at death's door; he looks back at his life and finds it full of triumph and failure. Bellitto also wrote The Soldier and The Contessa of Mulberry Street.

Peter Reznikoff stars as the novelist. Gena Bardwell and Michael Citriniti play various men and women in the writer's life.

The design team includes David Menkes (sets, costumes) and Wanda Lee Hall (lighting). Grammy nominee Anika Paris (the film "Bounce" and the album "On Gardner Street") and Dean Landon ("On Gardner Street") composed the original score.

Tickets are $15. HERE Arts Center is located at 145 Sixth Avenue between Spring and Broome Streets. For reservations, call (212) 647-0202. HERE is on the web at http://www.here.org. — By Christine Ehren
