Gurinder Chadha, who directed and co-wrote the film, is behind the upcoming musical project. Sonia Friedman will produce.
"The script is ready to go," Chadha told the Telegraph. "It’s going to be on both the West End and Broadway. We are currently deciding who is the right person to write the score, so it's at a really exciting stage."
The film, which also starred Parminder Nagra, Jonathan Rhys Myers, Anupam Kher, Shaznay Lewis and Archie Panjabi, centers around Jesminder Bhamra (Nagra), an 18-year-old who rebels against her orthodox Sikh parents. When she becomes friends with Juliette Paxton (Knightley), she is convinced to pursue her dreams of becoming a professional soccer player.
