Directed by Joel Sass, the acclaimed Broadway and Off-Broadway play, which is based on the famed Alfred Hitchcock film, will officially open at the Minnesota venue Nov. 5. Performances will continue through Dec. 19.
The four-person cast will comprise Robert O. Berdahl as the intrepid hero Richard Hannay; Sarah Agnew as both Annabella Schmidt, a beautiful spy with a deadly secret, and Pamela, Hannay's reluctant sidekick and love interest; and Jim Lichtscheidl and Luverne Seifert, as more than 150 characters.
"Mixing a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel and a dash of Monty Python," The 39 Steps, according to the Guthrie, "finds hero Richard Hannay embroiled in a high-speed chase across England and Scotland when the beautiful spy whom he has just met is suddenly murdered. Dodging police, charming ladies and uncovering clues at every turn, his search for the truth offers a sly nod to the art and tricks of live theater, creating an unforgettable evening at the Guthrie."
This stage adaptation closely follows Hitchcock's 1935 screen adaptation of Scottish writer John Buchan's 1915 novel of the same name.
The creative team will also include Richard Hoover (set design), Amelia Cheever (costume design), Barry Browning (lighting design), Reid Rejsa (sound design) and Michael Sommers (shadow puppetry). For ticket information visit www.guthrietheater.org.
