Classic Arts News   Berkeley's Cal Performances Announces 2005-06 Season

Cal Performances' 2005-06 season will include mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and the Mark Morris Dance Group, the Berkeley presenter announced yesterday.

The season is Cal Performances' 100th, and its 20th under the direction of Robert Cole.

Bartoli, who made her West Coast debut with Cal Performances in 1991 and has returned several times, will perform with the Zurich Orchestra La Scintilla. Morris's group, which will be celebrating its own 25th anniversary, also has a long history with the series: it first appeared in Berkeley in 1987 and has performed annually since 1994. MMDG's repertoire will include a commissioned world premiere set to music by Stravinsky.

Other musical highlights include recitals by soprano Deborah Voigt, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, pianist Andršs Schiff, and violinist Hilary Hahn. Chamber-music events include performances by the Takšcs, Borodin, and Brentano Quartets; the early music series features the vocal group Sequentia, the viola da gambist Jordi Savall, and Bach Collegium Japan.

The dance schedule includes performances by the Kirov Ballet, National Ballet of China, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. The jazz lineup includes pianist Brad Mehldau, guitarist Bill Frisell, pianist Chick Corea, pianist Dave Brubeck, and trumpeter Nicholas Payton.
