Berliner Symphoniker Shuts Down

Classic Arts News   Berliner Symphoniker Shuts Down

The Berliner Symphoniker has disbanded because of a lack of funds, Deutsche Welle reports.

The ensemble, the smallest of Berlin's eight orchestras, lost its government subsidy last year amid broad cuts in arts funding. Months later, it declared bankruptcy.

In December, the orchestra announced that it would become Germany's first private orchestra, reinventing itself as young, hip, and profit-minded. But it was unable to find sponsors.

The orchestra gave its final concert in Berlin on April 10.
