Hofstra University, which is located in Hempstead, N.Y., will award actress singer Bernadette Peters an Honorary Doctorate degree on May 19.

Peters will receive the degree at the university's spring commencement ceremonies, which will include remarks by the Tony-winning actress as well as speeches from Joe Bologna and Rene Taylor and U.S. attorney Mary Jo White.

Commencement ceremonies begin at 11:30 AM, and Peters is scheduled to speak at 3:30 PM at Hofstra's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Bologna and Taylor are scheduled for the second day of commencement, at 10 AM on May 20 at the School of Communication at Hofstra Arena. About the degree, Peters said in a statement: "It is an honor to receive this special recognition from such an esteemed university. I look forward to addressing the students as they embark on this exciting new chapter in their lives. Filled with hopes, dreams, and boundless enthusiasm, they are the shining stars of tomorrow."

It's a busy time for Peters, who — it was announced May 15 — will co-host the June 2 Tony Awards with Gregory Hines. A star of stage, film, recordings, concert and TV, Peters was last on Broadway in the hit revival of Annie Get Your Gun, garnering her second Tony Award for her performance as the sharp-shootin' Annie Oakley. She won her first Tony for her role as English hat designer Emma in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song & Dance. She received Tony nominations for her work in On the Town, Mack & Mabel, Sunday in the Park with George and The Goodbye Girl, and she also starred in the original production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods. Peters will make her solo Radio City Music Hall concert debut June 19.

Hofstra University, a private liberal arts institution, was founded in 1935 and is located in suburban Long Island. The University holds many prestigious international, national and regional accreditations and hosts more than 500 cultural events each year.
