News Bessie Awards Celebrate Best in New York Dance Tonight; Robert Fairchild Among Nominees The Apollo Theater hosts the 31st Annual New York Dance and Performance Awards (The Bessies) Oct. 19, recognizing exceptional and groundbreaking work in choreography, performance, music composition and visual design. Tony nominee Robert Fairchild is among the nominees; he is nominated for his leading role in the Broadway musical An American in Paris.

The evening is hosted by Jock Soto and Carmelita Tropicana, and the line-up of presenters includes Kyle Abraham, Ella Baff, Ivy Baldwin, Ping Chong, Robin Dunn, Marcelo Gomes, Rennie Harris, Cynthia Hopkins, Sam Miller, Jennifer Monson, Liz Prince, Jan Schmidt, Linda Celeste Sims and Nancy Stark Smith.

The event features performances by Flex star Storyboard P, choreographer/dancer Camille A. Brown and improviser/dance-maker Lisa Nelson. 

Fairchild, also a principal dancer with New York City Ballet, was the only Broadway star nominated in the category of Outstanding Performer. An American in Paris marked Fairchild's Broadway debut, and his performance garnered a string of high-profile award nominations, including a Tony nomination; he also won Theatre World, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, Astaire and Drama Desk Awards.

The other Bessie nominees in the Outstanding Performer category include fellow New York City Ballet dancer Amar Ramasar; Michelle Boulé for her work with Miguel Gutierrez; Lawrence Cassella; Juan Ogalla for Antigona by Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca; Ryoji Sasamoto; Melissa Toogood; Talya Epstein in Star Crap Method; Lauren Grant, and Alexandra Albrecht and Andrew Champlin.
