Classic Arts News   'Bessie' Awards for Dance and Performance Presented in New York
The New York Dance and Performance Awards were handed out at New York's Joyce Theater on Friday, September 17.

The awards, which are celebrating their 20th anniversary, are called the "Bessies" after the late dance teacher Bessie Schonberg, a mentor to many important figures in modern dance. Prizes range from $500 to $3000.

Among those honored were choreographer William Forsythe, for his "sustained achievement" with the now-disbanded Ballet Frankfurt; Holley Farmer, a dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company; Lisa Viola of the Paul Taylor Dance Company; and composer Philip Hamilton.

Dance teacher Mary Anthony won a special citation, as did Mark Russell, the recently departed artistic director of New York's Performance Space 122.
