The awards, which are celebrating their 20th anniversary, are called the "Bessies" after the late dance teacher Bessie Schonberg, a mentor to many important figures in modern dance. Prizes range from $500 to $3000.

Among those honored were choreographer William Forsythe, for his "sustained achievement" with the now-disbanded Ballet Frankfurt; Holley Farmer, a dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company; Lisa Viola of the Paul Taylor Dance Company; and composer Philip Hamilton.

Dance teacher Mary Anthony won a special citation, as did Mark Russell, the recently departed artistic director of New York's Performance Space 122.
