Kent Nicholson, the director of musical theatre and literary associate at Playwrights Horizons, formerly of TheatreWorks in California, returns to the Bay Area to stage the play on the Rep's intimate Thrust Stage. Previews began Oct. 7.

How to Write a New Book for the Bible is a co-production with Seattle Repertory Theatre. After the Berkeley Run, the cast will head north to perform the play in Washington state.

Cain won the Steinberg New Play Award for both Equivocation (which began at Oregon Shakespeare Festival and has blossomed in regional theatres) and 9 Circles. How to Write… was developed at the Ojai Playwrights Conference and at TheatreWorks as part of its New Works Festival.

"Every family creates a sacred story out of love," according to production notes. "In Bill Cain's poignant new play, a man moves in with his mother when she becomes too frail to care for herself. Their reunion heals old wounds, opening a heartfelt and humorous new chapter in their relationship. This timeless tale celebrates a mother's love and a son's devotion."

The production team includes Scott Bradley (scenic design), Callie Floor (costume design), Alexander V. Nichols (lighting design), Matt Starritt (sound design) and stage manager Kathy Rose.

The Seattle Rep run is Jan. 13-Feb. 5, 2012. For tickets and more information, visit berkeleyrep.org.
