The new musical is based on the world's first modern novel, Murasaki Shikibu's "Genji Monogatari" ("The Tale of Genji"), and features book, music and lyrics by Bobbie Lee Crow III.
The Tale of Murasaki – An Ancient Musical is described as such: "In a province of Japan during the 11th, a curious consort, Murasaki, is ridiculed for her clumsiness and 'un-womanly' behavior. In her search for acceptance and love, she fashions a story about her ideal man: the source of a forbidden attraction, the instigator of a passionate affair, the perfect protagonist; the 'Shining Lord' Genji. Through him, Murasaki samples love in all its forms: desired, unrequited, unspoken, and obsessive. She falls head over heels … until she lands as a character in her own story! Will Murasaki find the love she's been seeking in a world of her own creation?"
