News Boston Gets Chita, Doubt, Scoundrels, Piazza, Angry Men, Altar Boyz, More Tony Award winners Chita Rivera and Cherry Jones reprise their recent Broadway turns in A Dancer’s Life and Doubt, respectively, as part of the upcoming 2006-2007 nine-show season of Broadway Across America—Boston series. A pre-Broadway world premiere of the musical High Fidelity also plays.

Formerly called Broadway in Boston, the new season at The Colonial Theatre and The Opera House will include recent Broadway hits Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, All Shook Up, Twelve Angry Men and The Light in the Piazza as well as Off-Broadway hits Altar Boyz and STOMP.

The 2006-2007 Broadway Across America - Boston Series (subject to change) will line up as follows:

  • All Shook Up (Sept. 26-Oct. 8) - The Opera House
    Set to the musical catalog of Elvis Presley songs, the story of "how a young girl's dream comes true when a guitar-playin’ roustabout rides into a square state and turns the town upside down" is penned by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) and directed by Christopher Ashley (The Rocky Horror Show).

  • High Fidelity (Sept. 26-Oct. 22) - The Colonial Theatre
    The world premiere, pre-Broadway run of the new musical based on the Nick Hornby novel (made into the popular 2000 film) tells the story of a "record store owner who knows almost everything about pop music, but almost nothing about how to hang onto a girl." The score is by songwriters Tom Kitt (music) and Amanda Green (lyrics) and the book by David Lindsay-Abaire (Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo, Rabbit Hole). Walter Bobbie(Chicago) directs.
  • Altar Boyz (Oct. 31-Nov. 5) - Colonial
    Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker provide the score with book by Kevin Del Aguila to this behind-the-music tale of the ups and down of a God-worshipping boy band (with one Jewish member).
  • Twelve Angry Men (Nov. 7-19) - Colonial
    Richard Thomas and George Wendt star in the classic Reginald Rose jury-room drama which pits a dozen strangers against each other one hot summer day as they attempt to decide the fate of a seemingly open-and-shut murder case. Scott Ellis directs the Roundabout Theatre Company national tour.
  • STOMP (Dec. 5-17) - Colonial
    The "international percussion sensation" returns to Boston with its usual eight member troupe that "uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms."
  • Doubt (Feb. 6-18, 2007) - Colonial
    Cherry Jones reprises her Tony Award-winning turn as a nun principal at a Catholic school in 1964 who has suspicions about a priest. The Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play by John Patrick Shanley ("Moonstruck") is staged again by Tony Award winning director Doug Hughes.
  • Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (March 6-18, 2007) - Opera House
    The film about two con artists who engage in a winner-takes-all battle is musicalized by composer-lyricist David Yazbek (The Full Monty) and librettist Jeffrey Lane with direction by Jack O'Brien (Hairspray) and choreography by Jerry Mitchell (La Cage aux Folles).
  • Chita Rivera – The Dancer's Life (May 1-13, 2007) - Colonial
    Broadway legend and two-time Tony Award winner Rivera celebrates her life's work in this new musical penned by Terrence McNally and directed by Graciela Daniele. The show features moments from "some of her biggest hits, including West Side Story, Chicago, Bye Bye Birdie and Kiss of the Spider Woman."
  • The Light In The Piazza (May 29-June 9, 2007) - Colonial Theatre
    The romantic new musical by composer Adam Guettel and bookwriter Craig Lucas based on Elizabeth Spencer's novella about a woman on vacation in the Tuscan countryside with her daughter who falls in love with a handsome local. Bartlett Sher directs the multi-Tony Award winner. The traditional holiday production of Boston Ballet's The Nutcracker, again plays The Opera House, this year Nov. 24-Dec. 30.
