Classic Arts News Boston Lyric Opera Cancels Free Aida Budget shortfalls have forced Boston Lyric Opera to cancel two free performances of Verdi's Aida scheduled for September 2006 on the Boston Common, the company announced.
Project organizers hoped to emulate the success of Carmen on the Common, when two free performances in 2002 of Bizet's popular opera attracted over 140,000 people.

"This was a difficult decision for those of us who took such great pride in this program," said Janice Mancini del Sesto, BLO's general director.

"We are gratified by the generous support of foundations, individuals, and in-kind media sponsors for Aida on the Common but the corporate sponsorship dollars we expected this program would attract have not been forthcoming."
