Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews

Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews, writers of the hit 2015 musical Invisible Thread (Second Stage and ART), will present a developmental workshop of their new musical The Family Project in May. The new piece was written as a commission for Los Angeles Center Theater Group, and will be staged in New York the second week in May, specific dates to be announced..

The show is a documentary musical that chronicles how two men from different cultures, backgrounds and histories come together to form the new American family. Inspired by true stories by the families of the creators, The Family Project “explodes in a heart-pounding score about love and examines how tiny acts can alter the course of history.”

The Family Project will be directed by Tony nominee Dick Scanlan (Whorl Inside a Loop, Thoroughly Modern Millie) and will feature a cast that includes writers Griffin and Gould, along with Tony nominee Brad Oscar (Something Rotten!, The Producers), Jessica Molaskey (Sunday In The Park, Parade), Marva Hicks (Motown, Caroline or Change), Ken Robinson (The Color Purple, Baby It’s You), Gabrielle Stravelli (Lempicka) and Nicholas Christopher (Motown).

While the workshop will be presented primarily for the theatre industry, a small number of seats will be set aside for the public. Interested parties can contact the authors on their Facebook page at m.facebook.com/MattAndGriffin.

The team's Uganda-set musical Invisible Thread was presented in a fully staged version at Second Stage in fall 2015.
