Transport Group's 2018 gala benefit, A Toast to the Artist Honoring Dick Scanlan, is held March 12 at The Current, Pier 59 @ Chelsea Piers.
The 6:30 PM event honors Scanlan, who wrote the book and lyrics for the Tony-winning Thoroughly Modern Millie, with the Transporting American Theatre Award, which recognizes contributions to the American theatre. (A reunion concert, featuring much of the original cast of Millie, was recently presented to benefit The Actors Fund.)
Attendees can expect performances by Brandon Victor Dixon, Harriet Harris, Beth Malone, Kathleen Marshall, Michael Mayer, Sherie Rene Scott, Ali Stroker, Jeanine Tesori, Aaron Weinstein, Betsy Wolfe, and the cast of Whorl Inside a Loop (Derrick Baskin, Chris Meyers, Ryan Quinn, Daniel J Watts, Donald Webber Jr.).
Previous recipients of the Transporting American Theatre Award include Mary-Mitchell Campbell, Michael John LaChiusa, Gretchen Shugart, Barbara Whitman, Beth Williams, Sue Frost, Christian Borle, Paul Huntley, Douglas Carter Beane, Lewis Flinn, A.R. Gurney, Liz Smith, Barbara Frietag, Terrence McNally, and Joe Mantello.
With Sherie Rene Scott, Scanlan co-wrote the Tony-nominated musical Everyday Rapture and Whorl Inside a Loop, inspired by their experiences teaching in a men’s prison. Scanlan served as script consultant to Berry Gordy for Motown: The Musical, and his reinvented version of The Unsinkable Molly Brown has received productions at the Denver Center Theatre Company and the MUNY. In 2015, he directed Jake Gyllenhaal and Ellen Greene in Little Shop of Horrors at Encores! Off-Center. With Transport Group, he is currently collaborating with Carmel Dean and Jack Cummings III on a new musical, Renascence, inspired by the early life and work of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.
