Bravo, the Film and Arts Network, will broadcast the film version of Godspell at 10:30 PM on May 30. Starring Tony winner Victor Garber as Jesus, "Godspell" features a score by Stephen Schwartz and is based on the hit musical of the same name. The film, which opened in 1973, also includes performances by Katie Hanley, David Haskell, Merrell Jackson, Joanne Jonas, Robin Lamont, Gilmer McCormick, Jeffrey Mylett, Jerry Sroka and Tony winner Lynne Thigpen.
Based upon "The Gospel According to St. Matthew," Godspell premiered Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre in May 1971 where it ran for 2,124 performances. Featuring such tunes as "Day By Day" and "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord," the musical opened on Broadway in June 1976 at the Broadhurst Theatre and received a Tony nomination for Best Score. The original Broadway cast comprised Lamar Alford, Laurie Faso, Lois Foraker, Robin Lamont, Elizabeth Lathram, Bobby Lee, Tom Rolfing, Don Scardino, Marley Sims, Valerie Williams. Paul Shaffer, of "The David Letterman Show," played in the show's original band.
