The Grand Theatre of the Liceu was built at the initiative of the Liceu Filharmònico-Dramàtic Barcelonès. It was inaugurated in 1848. Over the years, it has been the victim of two fires and a bombing. The first fire was in 1861. On Nov. 7, 1893, during a performance of the opera William Tell, the anarchist Santiago Salvador Franch threw a bomb into the audience, killing 22 people. Finally, on Jan. 31, 1994, sparks produced by welders working on the stage caused the theatre's second fire, which burned down the stage, consumed the stalls and destroyed the roof of the building. The inauguration of the new Teatre del Liceu took place in October 1999 with the opera Turandot.
