Choreographer Andrew Ceglio, who was to star as Bat Boy, has withdrawn from the production for personal reasons. Brewer will portray the tabloid-inspired hero when the musical begins performances Feb. 27 on the Foothill College campus. Bat Boy runs through March 22.
Jay Manley directs a cast that also includes Kateri McRae, Ariel Buck, Tim Reynolds, Todd Wright, David Cates, RaMond Thomas, Michael Rhone, Sarah B. Griner and Monique Hafen.
Featuring a score by Laurence O'Keefe (Legally Blonde) and a book by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, Bat Boy, according to press notes, "is a dark but whimsical parable on the secret desires and depravities of a small West Virginia town. While visiting the caves outside of Hope Falls, West Virginia, three young explorers find a batboy hiding among the caverns. The local sheriff, unsure of what to do with the dangerous captive, who could be connected to the strange illness killing off the local cows, takes the batboy to the veterinarian. While the townspeople clamor for his destruction, Bat Boy, who is taken in by the veterinarian and his family, learns to read, speak, and even fall in love."
The production features musical direction by Spencer Williams, set design by Bruce McLeod, costume design by Julie Engelbrecht and lighting design by Kurt Landisman.
Tickets, priced $26, are available by phoning (650) 949-7360 or by visiting FoothillMusicals. The Foothill University's Lohman Theatre is located at 12345 El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills, CA.
