Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell, who was most recently on Broadway in Shuffle Along, has joined the lineup for the July 3–4 2017 Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, under the direction of Pops conductor Keith Lockhart.
Also set for event are the previously announced Hamilton Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr., Andy Grammer, and Melissa Etheridge. Alix Steel and Carol Massar will co-host with additional reporting by Matt Miller.
Tony- and Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken and Tony-winning lyricist Jack Feldman have composed a new work, “The Sum of Us,” for soloist, chorus, and orchestra, to receive its world premiere at Boston’s Independence Day celebration.
Mitchell won the 2000 Tony, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama Desk awards for his performance as Fred Graham/Petruchio in Kiss Me, Kate. His other Broadway credits include lead roles in King Hedley II, Ragtime, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Jelly's Last Jam, Oh, Kay!, Mail, and the City Center Encores! presentations of Do Re Mi and Carnival. Television audiences are familiar with Mitchell's work from his roles on Trapper John, M.D., Roots, and Frasier. Mitchell is Chairman of the Board of the Actors Fund. In 2016 he was named winner of the Isabelle Stevenson Award from the Tony Awards, and was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.
This year’s Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will additionally showcase the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus, along with the Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes and Drums. A 20-minute fireworks display, accompanied by the music of the Boston Pops and other popular music of the past and present, will bring the celebration to an end.
On July 4, gates open at 9 AM, and the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular concert begins at 8 PM, followed by the event’s fireworks display at approximately 10:30 PM. On July 3, the gates open at 5 PM, and the performance begins at 8 PM; there will be no fireworks on July 3.
The event will be broadcast on Bloomberg Television July 4; radio listeners in the greater Boston area can hear the concert through Bloomberg’s flagship station in Boston on 1200 AM and on SiriusXM satellite subscription radio on Channel 119. The multi-platform distribution also features live concert video streams on Bloomberg.com and on the Bloomberg mobile and OTT platforms.
