Tony Award nominees Carmen Cusack and Jeff Blumenkrantz, who appeared together on Broadway in Steve Martin’s and Edie Brickell’s musical Bright Star, will reunite May 20 for a concert at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal, New Jersey.
The two are promising “an array of Broadway songs and other compositions” at the 8 PM concert.
Cusack was nominated for a Tony as Best Actress in a Musical and several other awards for her Broadway debut in the lead role in Bright Star. She had previously starred as Elphaba in the national tour of Wicked and as Nellie Forbush in the North American tour of South Pacific.
And while Blumenkrantz has worked extensively as an actor in New York, in A Class Act, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (as Bud Frump), and most recently in the Encores production of The Golden Apple, he earned his Tony nomination for Best Original Score as part of a team of writers who co-composed songs for the 2003 musical Urban Cowboy.
Blumenkrantz, who grew up and still lives near the Axelrod Center, said, “Performing with the brilliant Carmen Cusack in Bright Star was the highlight of last year for me, so you can imagine how much I’m looking forward to sharing a stage with her again, at the Axelrod no less! My fondest memories are of the shows I did at the JCC Center Drama Workshop at the same Deal location, so concerts like this one are particularly sweet, given that I’m returning to the birthplace of my love of musical theatre.”
Tickets cost $35–$42 and can be ordered at Axelrodartscenter.com.
