Broadway Barkada, the Filipino theatre artists’ collective, salutes the Broadway songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty with a July 24 concert, Make Them Hear You: The Songs of Ahrens and Flaherty at the Cutting Room studios in New York.
The 7 PM concert features Alan Ariano, Emily Borromeo, Liz Casasola, Chris Ignacio, Brian Jose, and Gillian Munsayac with Belinda Allyn, Kathrina Feigh, Joanne Javien, Loresa Lanceta, Adrienne Tang and Isabelle Van Vleet. There will also be special guest appearances by Adam Jacobs, Don Darryl Rivera and Joshua Dela Cruz, currently appearing in Aladdin on Broadway, plus a special reunion number by the cast of Imelda—A New Musical.
Ahrens and Flaherty’s shows include Ragtime (Tony Award for Best Score), Seussical, Rocky, Once on This Island, Dessa Rose, My Favorite Year, A Man of No Importance and the film musical Anastasia, which has been adapted to the stage and is scheduled to open on Broadway in April 2017.
“There are themes of heritage, strength, sacrifice, family, and love in Lynn and Stephen’s shows. They speak not only to us as performers, but also as Filipinos,” said Brian Jose, co-founder of Broadway Barkada. “The sacrifices our parents made to come to this country… The faith and endurance our fellow Filipinos show during the many devastating hurricanes… The deep sense of family that is inherent within our own Filipino theatrical community… They are all represented in Lynn and Stephen’s shows. The heart of the Filipino can be found in their beautiful music and we are excited to explore it with their blessing.”
The show is directed by Billy Bustamante with musical direction/arrangements by Steven Cuevas.
The word “barkada” is a Tagalog (national language of the Philippines) word meaning “group of close friends, crew, gang, companions.”
