News Broadway Box Office Analysis, Dec. 16-22, 2013; Annie Gets a Holiday Boost, While Broadway Sales Increase by Nearly $1 Million Business ticked along fairly steadily on this week before Christmas, with box office and attendance not much changed from last week. Total collections across the 30 Broadway shows (same number as the week before) amounted to $27,539,204, nearly a million more than last week. Theatregoers numbered just more than 1,000 additional attendees.

There were even numbers of gain and losses among the 30 box office tallies. The family-friendly The Lion King did best, with an uptick of $387,554. Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark also showed well, as has been its habit in its final weeks on Broadway, bringing in an additional $148,303 over last week, and keeping its capacity over 100%. The old stand-by The Phantom of the Opera collected $195,808 more than it had the previous seven-day period. Also showing a decent leap in box office activity was the on-its-way-out revival of Annie, which increased its take by $115,916 over last week. Producers seem to have been smart to keep the show going through the holidays. A show with Christmas as its backdrop, it played to capacity for the first time in many months.

The Roundabout Theatre Company presented the first four previews of its new revival of the classic Machinal to 69 percent capacity crowds and a meager 21 percent of its box-office potential. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical still in previews, ran to 86 percent capacity crowds.

At its new home at the Broadhurst, Mamma Mia! played to 77 percent capacity audiences, and garnered 59 percent of is potential till.
