Broadway "Hackathon" Event Targets Theatrical Smartphone Apps | Playbill

News Broadway "Hackathon" Event Targets Theatrical Smartphone Apps Attention theatre fans who know how to program: You can help build Broadway’s future on the web at the two-day "Broadway Hackathon" May 11-12, sponsored by The New York Public Library at Lincoln Center, Masie Productions and Harvard University.

The purpose of the "hackathon" is not to hack anybody, but to compete to build the latest, hottest Broadway apps for smartphones and laptops.

Sponsors says they are looking for participants to create apps and prototypes that will:

  • Leverage the power of mobile technology to support the Broadway experience.
  • Make the library’s collections more usable.
  • Better connect actors, producers, creative teams, theatre makers and audiences.
  • Allow the public to have fun with library collections.
  • Connect public information about theatre from around the world.
  • Explore the role of “apps” in the full theatre experience from idea to script to Broadway. In return, the library will provide meals, coffee, WiFi, and access to Broadway-related data from its extensive archives.

Sponsors said they welcome participants with advanced programming skills. But there is room for forward thinkers of all kinds.

They are seeking:
  • Hackers who can use their skills in graphic design, web development, mobile development, or data architecture to create a prototype of an app "that will rock."
  • Idea Generators: If you don’t have technical skills, you can help design sketches or flows (wireframes) of potential apps.
  • Feedback: The sponsors say they welcome Broadway fans who want to provide feedback, brainstorm and help with data. This event is sponsored by the New York Public Library, Masie Productions (and other Broadway producers), and the Division of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University.

Difficulty: All work created at the hackathon will be released under an open license.

The event will run 10 AM - 8 PM Monday, May 11 and 10 AM - 5 PM Tuesday May 12 at the performing arts library at Lincoln Center, next door to the Vivian Beaumont Theatre where The King and I is playing.

Tickets are free, but you must register in order to participate. Interested? Register here.
