The 80-minute film was directed by Doug Hamilton and is described as such: "'Broadway Idiot' follows Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong from a punk rock concert at Madison Square Garden to the opening of his musical American Idiot on Broadway - only ten blocks away, but worlds apart. From behind the curtain share in the crazy journey of turning the mega-hit album into a punk rock musical - and ultimately see how the world of theater transformed Billie Joe."

Based on Green Day's groundbreaking rock opera album, "American Idiot," the 90-minute show about three suburban pals who take divergent paths in post-9/11 America is a collaboration of Green Day and the Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer (who co-wrote the book), Tony Award-winning orchestrator Tom Kitt and Olivier Award-winning choreographer Steven Hoggett.

American Idiot began preview performances March 24, 2010, and opened on Broadway to solid reviews on April 20, 2010, following its world-premiere, twice-extended limited engagement at Berkeley Repertory Theatre's Roda Theatre in California. Its final Broadway performance was April 24, 2011.

The original Broadway cast included Tony winner John Gallagher, Jr., Michael Esper and Stark Sands.

The musical was nominated for the 2010 Tony as Best Musical, and won two Tonys for its scenic and lighting design. The show also won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, plus a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award.
