In early January, Tony Award-winning producers Barry and Fran Weissler, along with David Mirvish, announced plans to bring a new production of Titanic to Broadway, inspired by the acclaimed chamber production of the musical that played London's Southwark Playhouse last year. U.K. director Thom Southerland was attached to helm.
A representative for the production confirmed to Playbill.com that the production had been postponed due to the lack of an available Broadway theatre during the 2014-15 season. The Toronto engagement, which was to take place July 22-Aug. 31, has been canceled.
Producers state that they remain committed to the production and that revised plans for Titanic will be announced as soon as scheduling allows.
The musical that tells the story of the passengers of the doomed luxury liner has a Tony-winning score by Yeston (Grand Hotel, Nine) and a Tony-winning book by the late Stone (The Will Rogers Follies, 1776). It opened on Broadway April 23, 1997.
Titanic won 1997 Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical (Stone), Best Musical, Best Orchestrations (Jonathan Tunick), Best Score (Yeston) and Best Scenic Design (Stewart Laing).
