News   Broadway Stars and More Commemorate Late Playwright with August Wilson Day April 27

Whoopi Goldberg, Tamara Tunie and Radio Golf co-stars Harry Lennix and Tonya Pinkins celebrate August Wilson Day on what would have been the playwright's 62nd birthday, April 27.

Wilson's widow, Constanza Romero, will also be part of the festivities that will honor the late two-time Pulitzer Prize winner at 10 AM in New York City's Bryant Park.

The day-long tribute will feature a performance of the rarely-heard Wilson poetic monologue, "Janitor"; a special post-show celebration at the evening performance of Radio Golf at the Cort Theatre; and post-show curtain speeches at regional theatres nationwide.

The aforementioned stars will also announce a partnership with New York City's public schools that will see 300 students in all five boroughs studying "Janitor" as part of a city-wide "Poem In Your Pocket" celebration.

Radio Golf, the final play in Wilson's ten-part century cycle, is currently in previews at Broadway's Cort Theatre and opens May 8.

Kenny Leon (Gem of the Ocean, A Raisin in the Sun) directs Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins and Harry Lennix in a cast that also features Anthony Chisholm, John Earl Jelks and James A. Williams. With Radio Golf, Wilson ended his ten-play cycle which chronicles the African American experience in the 20th century, decade by decade. The 1990s-set play involves real estate developers who look to tear down the home of recurring character Aunt Esther.

Wilson's epic cycle (in order of decade which the drama is set) includes Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, The Piano Lesson, Seven Guitars, Fences, Two Trains Running, Jitney, King Hedley II and Radio Golf.

Tickets to Radio Golf are available by calling (212) 239-6200 and at the Cort Theatre box office. For further information, visit radiogolfonbroadway.com.
