Broadway Television Network's (BTN) anticipated purchase of the theatre website, Theatre.com is a done deal, BTN reports. The acquisition was first reported on Playbill On-Line on Jan. 24. and details are expected within the hour.
As reported earlier, BTN was said to be interested in Theatre.com just two weeks after its launch in New York City on Jan. 18. In materials made available to the media then, network founder Kay Koplovitz (the founder and former chief executive officer of USA Networks), envisioned the Broadway network as "the source of digital distribution of currently running musicals for wireless and cable pay-per-view (PPV) systems, direct broadcast satellite (DBS), the Internet, HDTV giant screen and home video."
Theatre.com, a theatre website originally launched under the name buybroadway.com, has been in operation since 1996. BTN has indicated that it plans to provide a significant internet site as part of its theatre portfolio.
BTN reportedly issued a letter of intent in January for the purchase of Theatre.com and Theatre.com staff members were informed by management that "a major, exciting piece of company news" was forthcoming. Theatre.com is a public company run by Toby Simpkin.
