Carrie Compere, one of the original Church Ladies in the Tony-winning Broadway revival of The Color Purple, will step into the role of Sofia starting with the November 15 performance.

She succeeds Tony nominee Danielle Brooks, who originated the role in this production. Brooks gives her final performance November 13.

Compere appeared on Broadway previously in the rap musical Holler If Ya Hear Me and Off-Broadway in Sistas the Musical as Gloria. She also appeared in the first national tour of Shrek the Musical and regionally in Smokey Joe’s Cafe at Theatre Under the Stars in Texas.

She will appear opposite Cynthia Erivo, who won the Tony Award for her performance as Celie, and another Tony winner, Jennifer Holliday, who recently joined the cast as Shug Avery.
