The Manhattan Theatre Club world premiere of John Patrick Shanley’s The Portuguese Kid was captured December 11 for future release on the theatrical streaming service BroadwayHD. Representatives confirmed the news.
A release date has not been determined.
Written and directed by Shanley, the world premiere officially opened Off-Broadway October 24, and was twice extended. The Portuguese Kid tells the story of two mismatched couples living in Providence as they navigate love, death, childhood fears, and one very domineering mother.
The show played its final public performance December 10 at MTC’s New York City Center Stage I. The BroadwayHD capture was filmed the following day in front of an invited audience. Representatives for MTC and BroadwayHD declined to comment on the taping.
In recent years BroadwayHD has live-streamed or filmed a host of theatre, including the Broadway productions of She Loves Me and Holiday Inn, as well as the Off-Broadway productions of Daddy Long Legs, Buried Child, and Richard Nelson’s timely political trilogy The Gabriels at the Public Theater.
