The one-night-only event, which will benefit the Actors' Fund of America, is designed to "become a new, annual tradition." The evening will feature original pieces written by Eve Ensler and Tony Award winners Richard Greenberg, John Guare, Terrence McNally and David Henry Hwang as well as appearances from cast members of most every Broadway show.
Those theatre stars scheduled to perform include Matthew Broderick, Liz Callaway, Stephanie D’Abruzzo, Raul Esparza, Tovah Feldshuh, Heather Headley, Richard Kind, Eartha Kitt, Marc Kudisch, Ricki Lake, Nathan Lane, Norm Lewis, Patti LuPone, Lypsinka, Donna McKechnie, Stephanie Mills, Alfred Molina, Brad Oscar, Elizabeth Parkinson, Rosie Perez, Alice Ripley, Sherie Rene Scott, Lucy T. Slut, Stanley Tucci, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Michelle T. Williams and Bebe Winans. The evening will also include a performance by Michael McElroy and the Broadway Inspirational Voices.

The evening is being presented by the Actors' Fund in association with Sh K-Boom Records. In a statement Sh-K-Boom President Kurt Deutsch said, "With the exception of Radio City’s Rockettes and the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting, New York has no annual event to commemorate the Christmas season, certainly none from the Broadway community. We aim to create a new and joyful holiday tradition for the City with our yearly Benefit concert, bringing together Broadway’s best and brightest stars, every Christmas, for a great cause." Paul Dobie and Lisa Leguillo will direct the benefit with choreography by Richard Amaro, Andrew Palermo and Ken Roberson.
The creative team for Great Joy! comprises Paul Weimer (set design), Martin Vreeland (lighting design), Cynthia J. Hawkins (sound design) and Michael Growler (costume design).
