The production, which had been scheduled to begin previews Nov. 14, will now commence performances Nov. 28 at the Foxwoods Theatre. Opening night has been moved from Dec. 21 to Jan. 11, 2011.
"The music, marking the Broadway debut of the U2 frontmen," according to the New York Times, "still isn't synchronized with special effects, plot and dialogue. Scene-to-scene transitions, essential for rhythm and safety, aren't complete."
Producer Michael Cohl said in a statement, "Shows like ours, that embrace the challenge of opening on Broadway without an out-of-town tryout, often need to adjust their schedules along the way. Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark has an unprecedented level of technical artistry, and getting it right takes time. We apologize in advance to any inconvenienced ticketholders."
Ticket holders for the postponed performances will be contacted directly and given the ability to exchange their tickets for a future performance at no cost or receive a full refund. Tickets purchased at the box office may be brought back to the box office during the hours of 10 AM-8 PM, Monday through Saturday, to be exchanged or refunded.
Spider-Man faced other challenges last week when cast member Kevin Aubin broke both his wrists during a flying sequence presented for ticket brokers and group sales agents. As a result, the New York State Department of Labor visited the Foxwoods Theatre the week of Nov. 1 to address safety issues. The results of that inquiry are not yet public. Actors' Equity has launched its own investigation. Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark features a book by Julie Taymor and Glen Berger, and new music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge. The musical had originally been announced to arrive during the 2009 season, but was postponed due to financing.
Producers are Michael Cohl, Jeremiah J. Harris, Hello Entertainment/David Garfinkle, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Land Line Productions, by association with Marvel Entertainment.
The cast features Reeve Carney as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Next to Normal Tony nominee Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane Watson and Broadway veteran Patrick Page as Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin.
