The "all new progressive political comedy show" starring established and emerging voices in comedy will also be seen around the country.
"Laughing Liberally saves democracy one laugh at a time through live performances, video and music, touring productions, and a website that hosts a 'Liberal Library' of writings, commentary and laughs from the left," according to production notes. "Laughing Liberally features up-to-the-minute commentary on the week's headlines and the state of the country as well as video and musical segments."
Eric Krebs produces. His cast includes: Will Durst, Jim David, Dean Obeidallah, Julie Goldman, Benari Poulten, Negin Farsad, Elizabeth June and Jamie Jackson.
The brainchild of David Alpert, Katie Halper and Justin Krebs, Laughing Liberally "began as a set of auditions for local political comics to appear in four showcases at Stand-Up NY." Some 200 comics were seen and 40 were selected to appear in the showcases. The showcases led to the Town Hall evening. The topics addressed range from gay marriage to the American military to gun control and recently indicted politicians.
According to producer Eric Krebs, "We were ecstatic by the success of the first Laughing Liberally. Over 1,300 people showed up. We took that as a sign to turn Laughing Liberally into a national presence, something we are now doing with performances booked for Los Angeles and Boston as well as five return dates planned from now to the end of the year at Town Hall in New York City. With the midterm elections coming up and with the state of politics, there is a great deal of public and press interest in the whole Laughing Liberally concept."
