The dead of winter is invariably a slow time for Broadway theatres, so once again, a number of shows are offering major discounts and ticket deals for just after the New Year.

Beauty And The Beast, now starring Deborah Gibson, has this deal: For every adult-priced ticket bought for seats between Jan. 7-March 1, 1998, you get a free children's ticket (use the code "MKIDS"). Not all seats are available, and tickets must be purchased before Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 27), but otherwise the promotion is similar to the Kids' Night On Broadway events planned by the League of American Theatres & Producers. (That promotion, however, covers only selected performances in January.)

Visit Beauty's 47th St. box office or call TicketMaster (212) 307 4100 for information on the promotion.

Now for the fourth straight year, producer Cameron Mackintosh is holding a "winter sale" on the two Boublil-Schonberg musicals, Les Miserables and Miss Saigon. Orchestra and front mezzanine seats, usually $75, are only $30. Rear mezzanine seats are $20 or $10. Tickets must be purchased Nov. 16-30 for seats available (Mondays Thursdays) Jan. 5-8, 12-15, 20-22, 26-29, Feb. 2-5, 9-12, 17-19, 23-26 and March 2-5.

Spokespersons at The Publicity Office point out that over the past three years, the Les Miz/Saigon discounts have grossed more than $5 million and led to sell-out houses "during the typically slow months of January and February." Tickets are sold via TeleCharge (212) 239-6200 or at the theatres. Les Miserables, now past its tenth birthday, plays at the Imperial on West 45th St., and Miss Saigon on West 53rd.

Both Smokey Joe's Cafe and Forever Tango are offering the same discount promotion, Jan. 6-March 29, 1998. Orchestra seats are $30, the rest are $15, valid for every performance except Saturday nights or Valentines weekend. Tickets must be purchased -- (212) 239-6200 -- before Nov. 30. Tango twists at the Walter Kerr Theatre on West 48th St.; Smokey Joe boogies at the Virginia Theatre, West 52nd St.

The half-price spirit has also overtaken The King And I, which is offering a 50 percent discount promo, Dec. 16-Feb. 28, 1998. Available dates for the discount are extremely limited and must be purchased by Nov. 30. Call (212) 307-4100 or visit the Neil Simon Theatre box office on West 52nd St., for details.

For Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday performances of Cats at the Winter Garden Theatre, all tickets are either $20 or $35, but must be ordered before Nov. 23. The available dates are Dec. 1-23 and Jan. 5-March 11. For tickts visit the 50th St. box office or call Telecharge at (212) 239-6200.
