In a sponsorship deal with the Shubert Organization, which owns the theatre, Cadillac added its name to the venue in spring 2002. The other Broadway theatres with sponsorships are the American Airlines Theatre (run by the Roundabout Theatre Company) and the Hilton Theatre.
Before Mamma Mia! began in 2001, the Winter Garden hosted Cats from 1982 to 2000. It underwent a one-year refurbishment in between the two shows.
The theatre opened with La Belle Paree in 1911 and would eventually be the site of several incarnations of The Passing Show and several Ziegfield Follies, plus Hellzapoppin, Wonderful Town, Peter Pan, Bus Stop, West Side Story, Once Upon a Mattress, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Funny Girl, Mame, Purlie, Follies, Pacific Overtures, Gilda Radner — Live From New York, Beatlemania and 42nd Street, which moved to the Majestic after seven months.
