News Cagney! Will Dance at FL Stage; New Works by Dietz, Mastrosimone, Trieschmann Also Planned Florida Stage, the south Florida company devoted to new works, has announced a 2008-09 season of no fewer than four world premieres — including a biographical musical called Cagney!

The Manalapan, FL, troupe will give voice to world premieres by William Mastrosimone (Dirty Business), Peter Colley and Robert Creighton (Cagney!), Catherine Trieschmann (The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock) and Steven Dietz (Yankee Tavern).

Michele Lowe, known for her String of Pearls, will see the Southeastern premiere of her Mezzulah, 1946 in the coming year.

Dirty Business by Mastrosimone will launch the season Oct. 22-Nov. 30. According to Florida Stage, "From the celebrated, Emmy Award-winning author of Into the West, Extremities and The Woolgatherer, comes a fiery new drama about the political shenanigans and personal dalliances leading up to a presidential election. Based on the true story of a party girl caught between a mafia capo and the President of the United States. A hit of 2008 1st Stage New Works Festival."

The Florida Stage season also includes:

  • Mezzulah, 1946, Dec. 10, 2008-Jan. 18, 2009: "The war is over and the boys are home, but at the Boeing airplane plant Mezzulah has no intention of giving her job to a man. Like her hero, Leonardo da Vinci, 19-year-old Mezzulah is ahead of her time and dreaming of flight. But she won't be flying solo. Along with Mezzulah, the other women of Monroe, Washington are about to take wing — each in her own way. A transcendent new play with heart, humor and period music by the author of String of Pearls."
  • Cagney! by Peter Colley and Robert Creighton, Jan. 28-March 8, 2009: "A brand new musical celebration! A tour-de-force production! A tribute to a legend of film and stage! From the mean streets of New York came Jimmy Cagney, an accomplished 'hoofer' and the cinema's quintessential tough guy. This is an intimate portrait of the man, his art and his politics, his love of family and his enormous generosity. Full of fabulous music and astonishing dance, come celebrate Cagney, America's favorite gangster and beloved Yankee Doodle Dandy."
  • The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock by Catherine Trieschmann, March 25-May 3, 2009: "The War Between the States is over and young soldiers are struggling to stitch together the pieces of their shattered worlds. A young blind woman's romance with a sweet-talking Union soldier fuels her mother's need to avenge her Confederate son's death. Another hit of the 2008 1st Stage New Works Festival."
  • Yankee Tavern by Steven Dietz, May 13-June 21, 2009: "From the acclaimed playwright of Lonely Planet, Private Eyes and Fiction, comes this dramatic thriller set in a crumbling tavern in New York. A young couple is caught in a web of conspiracy theories surrounding the 9/11 attacks. In an instant, outlandish hypothesis becomes dangerous reality as critical facts continue to emerge. A highly praised selection from the 2007 1st Stage New Works Festival." Florida Stage, near West Palm Beach, is under the leadership of Louis Tyrrell (producing director) and Nancy Barnett (managing director). For more information visit www.floridastage.org.
