Artistic director Gordon Edelstein directs the work that will open April 4 at the New Haven, CT, company's Stage II for a run through April 29. Cale and Orlandersmith team up for the first time on the new work, which is billed as "a theatrical 'concept album' with individual vignettes journeying through love, joy, sexuality, heartbreak, race and music." Show materials pose the question: "When the days of your life are called into account, will your life be one lived in the joy of each and every moment? Or will you look back and always wonder 'what if?'"
Both creators are also noted performers; Cale has played in Floyd and Clea Under a Western Sky and Orlandersmith gained acclaim for her work in Yellowman.
The design team features Neil Patel (set), Anita Yavich (costumes), Jennifer Tipton (lighting) and John Gromada (sound).
The Long Wharf will close the current season with Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya (May 9-June 3).
Tickets to The Blue Album at Long Wharf Theatre, 222 Sargent Drive in New Haven, CT, are available by calling (203) 787-4282 or by visiting the theatre's website at www.longwharf.org.
