Nigerian-born and UK-based baritone Tayo Aluko, who shares Lincoln's birthday and turns 50 on the day of this special performance, portrays Robeson. Aluko has appeared as guest soloist with a number of orchestras, music societies and choirs in the UK, Germany, Ireland and Nigeria, including Britain's longest-established professional symphony orchestra, the Hallé. Featuring some of Robeson's most famous songs and speeches, Call Mr. Robeson, press notes state, is a "roller coaster journey through Robeson's remarkable and eventful life. From his successes as a professional football player, Columbia law school graduate, and Broadway actor, to his involvement with the radical civil rights movement which led to his summoning before The House Un-American Activities Committee, his branding as a traitor, and being blacklisted from performing, Call Mr. Robeson charts the rise and fall of one of the 20th Century's most impressive, but often overlooked, figures."
