Classic Arts News Callas Jewels Go Under the Hammer at Sotheby's Eleven pieces of jewelry belonging to the late opera singer Maria Callas will be auctioned by Sotheby's in Geneva today.
According to the BBC, the items up for auction include an 11.7-carat diamond ring, which should bring up to Ô£100,000, a diamond-and-emerald ring, worth between Ô£45,000 and Ô£78,000, and a ruby-and-diamond brooch, from the jeweler Van Cleef and Arpels, valued at Ô£28,0000-Ô£45,000. Altogether, the sale is expected to bring in Ô£400,000.

The jewelry was given to Callas by her husband, industrialist Giovanni Battista Meneghini, who married the diva in 1949. She later left him for shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.

The jewels, which were displayed in New York, London, Paris, Rome, Milan, and Lugano before going to auction, were left to a friend, who remains anonymous, when Callas died in 1977.
