Elaine Calder, former interim director and chief executive officer of Canada's National Arts Centre in Ottawa, is the new managing director of Hartford Stage in Connecticut, effective June 1999. The appointment ends a major leadership transition that began in May 1997 when artistic Mark Lamos announced the end of his 18 years at Hartford Stage. Michael Wilson is artistic director there.

Calder was senior operating officer of Canadian Opera Company for more than three years and also worked at the Shaw Festival (1990-94) and London, Ontario's Grand Theatre (1986-89).

Calder replaces Stephen J. Albert, who stepped down in September 1998.
