Candide marks the third live musical captured on film to be released on Digital Theatre, alongside two Sondheim musicals: Maria Friedman’s award-winning production of Merrily We Roll Along and the Open Air Theatre’s acclaimed staging of Into The Woods.

Robert Delamere, co-founder and CEO of Digital Theatre, said in a statement, “I am delighted that Digital Theatre are releasing Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. This Broadway classic, a hugely entertaining and intelligent musical will now be accessible to a global online audience. Together with Merrily We Roll Along and Into the Woods, Digital Theatre is growing a library of musicals that stand the test of time, and can be enjoyed time and time again."

Candide will be available to rent online for a limited period, download, view with Samsung Smart TV, stream to an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS app, and on Digital's on-demand IPTV channel for TalkTalk TV Plus with YouView.

Candide features music by Leonard Bernstein, a book adapted from Voltaire by Hugh Wheeler, lyrics by Richard Wilbur and additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, John Latouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker and Bernstein

Directed by Lonny Price, the cast includes Kristin Chenoweth as Cunegonde, Patti LuPone as The Old Lady, Paul Groves as Candide and Sir Thomas Allen as Dr. Pangloss/Narrator. Marin Alsop conducts the New York Philharmonic, with the participation of the Westminster Symphonic Choir.
