News Carbonell Award Winners The Theatre Circle of South Florida Critics Association gave top honors to national touring companies of "Angels in America" and "Shlemiel the First," and a regional production of "Ruthless!" in the 20th annual Carbonell Awards.

The Theatre Circle of South Florida Critics Association gave top honors to national touring companies of "Angels in America" and "Shlemiel the First," and a regional production of "Ruthless!" in the 20th annual Carbonell Awards.

"Angels in America," presented at The Gusman Cultural Center in Miami, was named Best Production. It also won Best Director (Michael Mayer), Best Actor (Jonathan Hadary) and Best Supporting Actress (Kate Goehring).

The musical "Schlemiel the First," which appeared at four South Florida theatres, won Best Actress (Marilyn Sokol) and Best Supporting Actor (Charles Levin).

Among regional plays, "Faith Healer" (New World Repertory) and "Neil's Garden" (Off Broadway and Area Stage) were named outstanding new plays.

Among regional musicals, "Ruthless!" (Colony Theatre) won four awards, including outstanding musical. Caldwell Theatre Company won two Carbonells: supporting actress in a musical, to Kim Cozort in "Company"; and supporting actress in a play, to Pat Nesbit in "The Price." The George Abbott Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts went to Louis Tyrrell, founder-director of the Pope Theatre in Palm Beach County.

The regional awards are given by the SFCA, augmented by a panel of theatre professionals.
