Cast Announced for NYTW's The Black Eyed by Shamieh

News   Cast Announced for NYTW's The Black Eyed by Shamieh Casting has been announced for the upcoming New York Theatre Workshop production of Betty Shamieh's The Black Eyed.

Performances begin July 17 at the company's home stage at 79 East 4th Street toward a July 31 opening night. Sam Gold directs.

NYTW presents the newest play from Roar playwright Shamieh that "depicts four Arab women from across the ages who meet in the afterlife," according to an announcement. The women include "the Biblical Delilah, a modern suicide bomber, a victim of medieval Christian crusaders and a contemporary, secular Arab-American."

The cast features Aysan Celik (as Aiesha), Lameece Issaq (Tamam), Jeanine Serralles (Architect) and Emily Swallow (Delilah).

The design team comprises Paul Steinberg (scenic), Gabriel Berry (costume), Jane Cox (lighting) and Darron L West (sound). The production stage manager is Rachel Zack.

Playwright Shamieh authored the play Territories — which will enjoy its world premiere this season where Black Eyed also debuted in 2005, at the Magic Theatre. Other plays include Again and Against, The Machine as well as Roar — which played Off-Broadway at The New Group starring Annabella Sciorra and Sarita Choudhury. The NYTW season began with Rinde Eckert's Horizon, which plays through July 1. Also forthcoming are productions of The Misanthrope directed by Ivo van Hove, JoAnne Akalaitis directing Mikhail Baryshnikov in short plays by Samuel Beckett, Things of Dry Hours by Naomi Wallace and the Elevator Repair Service's staging of The Sound and the Fury.
