News Cast Announced for World Premiere of Passin' It On, Broadway-Aimed Musical With Len Cariou Len Cariou, Broadway's original Sweeney Todd, plays the owner of a South Florida sports bar in the world premiere of the musical, Passin' It On, beginning previews Oct. 18 at Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami.

Jeffrey Moss directs the New York-aimed show, which has music and lyrics by Terry Cashman and book by Larry Atlas. The staging has been billed as pre-Broadway, with commercial producers Sally Jacobs and Warren Baker attached.

According to Coconut Grove, "Passin' It On introduces audiences to Sig McCartney (Cariou), a life-long baseball fan and the owner of a baseball-themed sports bar in a small South Florida town. Surrounded by friends and family, Sig's life is simple and happy. But when the local baseball spring training camp moves north and the tourists follow, Sig must choose between his childhood dream and his family's survival."

The cast includes Sy Adamowsky, Frank Anderson, Robert Bartley, Jordan Bennett, Michael Flanigan, Julia Haubner, Joe Ricci and Chris Ian Sanchez. Canadian-born Cariou recently appeared in Broadway's Proof. He won the Tony Award for Sweeney Todd in 1979 and was nominated for his work in A Little Night Music and Applause.

Passin' It On opens Oct. 21. Performances continue at Coconut Grove Playhouse to Nov. 6, after which the show will play the Parker Playhouse in Ft. Lauderdale in a new arrangement between CGP and Parker. Parker dates are Nov. 8-13.

Musical direction is by Andrew Wilder (Broadway's Little Women). The creative team includes Joe Gionono (orchestrations), Lisa Shriver (choreographer), Antje Ellerman (scenic designer), Ellis Tillman (costume designer), Kirk Bookman (lighting).

Cashman is a songwriter, music producer and ex-baseball player who "has had a life-long love affair with baseball and music." With his partner Tommy West, he recorded three albums as Cashman & West, and together they discovered and produced Jim Croce. Called the "Balladeer of Baseball," he has since written over 50 songs about the national pastime.

Atlas is the author of eight produced plays, including Sonnetteer, Sweet Talker, Subject Animal, Permanent and Total Abandon, which was produced on Broadway starring Richard Dreyfuss and John Heard. A former actor, he has appeared in numerous plays in New York and regionally, and in principal or lead roles in such films as "King of America," "Cruising," "Firstborn" and more.

Passin' It On marks director Jeffrey Moss' 11th production at the Coconut Grove Playhouse.
