A sequel to the hit "Mamma Mia!" film, which was based on the London and Broadway musical of the same name, is in the works, according to the New York Post.

Meryl Streep, who starred as mom Donna Sheridan in the 2008 film, may reprise her role, and Casey Nicholaw, the Tony-winning director of The Book of Mormon, may direct.

No official announcement about a sequel has been made.

Universal's Mamma Mia!, which boasted Streep and Pierce Brosnan among its cast, was released in July 2008 and grossed a whopping $609,841,637 worldwide, a composite of $144,130,063 domestically and $465,711,574 overseas. The film, featuring the songs of Abba, remains the box-office champ of recent movie musicals.

The Broadway production of Mamma Mia! is scheduled to end its run at the Broadhurst Theatre Sept. 12. The Post reports that cast members from all 14 years of its lengthy run will make an appearance in the final show. A block party in front of the Broadhurst will also be held.
