News Casting Announced for Minnesota Premiere of In the Red and Brown Water at the Guthrie In the Red and Brown Water, the first play in Tarell Alvin McCraney's trilogy The Brother/Sister Plays, will begin performances at the Guthrie Theater May 12 with an official opening on May 13.

The play, to be directed by Marion McClinton, will be presented by the Pillsbury House Theatre in partnership with The Mount Curve Company and the Guthrie.

Casting includes Ansa Akyea (Shango), Nathan Barlow (The Egungun), Aimee K. Bryant (Shun), John Catron (O Li Roon), Celeste Jones (Nia), Gavin Lawrence (Elegba), Greta Oglesby (Aunt Elegua), Sonja Parks (Mama Moja) and James A. Williams (Ogun Size).

In the Red and Brown Water, according to press notes, "tells the story of Oya, a charismatic high school track star, who hopes to use her speed as a ticket out of the Louisiana bayou. Fate intervenes as the teenager makes a life-defining decision to defer an athletic scholarship in order to care for her ailing mother, Mama Moja. When her mother dies and Oya finds the scholarship is no longer available, she is left to grapple with the consequences of this missed opportunity. Having lost her dream, her family and identity, Oya finds herself entangled with two men – the gentle Ogun and the seductive Shango. Oya’s choices take her on a journey that leads to a powerful gesture of grief and sacrifice."

The creative team includes scenic designer David Gallo, costume designer Kalere A. Payton, lighting designer Mike Wangen, sound designer C. Andrew Mayer and stage manager Julia Gallagher.
