As previously announced on Playbill On-Line, Lorraine Serabian will portray the late opera diva Maria Callas in the Tony-winning play, which will be mounted at the Nyack theatre Feb. 22-March 9. Serabian will be joined by Theodora Middleton, Sherry Boone and Alberto Sanchez; the latter three will play the aspiring students who partake in Callas' master classes.
Serabian received a 1969 Tony Award nomination for her performance in the original cast of Zorba. She has also appeared on Broadway in Carmelina and the revival of the drama The Flowering Peach, and was seen Off-Broadway in Ruthless, The Life of Walter Mitty, Electra and The Trojan Women.
Theodora Middleton starred in the Broadway production of Master Class as well as the national tour featuring Faye Dunaway; Alberto Sanchez also appeared in the Master Class national tour; and Sherry Boone was seen in the Broadway productions of Marie Christine and Jelly's Last Jam.
Terrence McNally's Master Class concerns the now-legendary classes that Maria Callas gave at the Juilliard School. The Broadway production cast Zoe Caldwell, who received a Tony Award for her critically acclaimed performance, in the role of Callas. Others who followed her into the demanding part included Evita's Patti LuPone and "Designing Women" star Dixie Carter. LuPone also starred in the London production of the play.
