Penned by Tony Award-winning Hairspray songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and Tony-winning playwright Terrence McNally (Master Class, The Full Monty, Kiss of the Spider Woman), the sleek, jazz-inflected musical opened on Broadway April 10 at the Neil Simon Theatre.
It reunites much of the creative team behind the hit musical Hairspray, including director Jack O'Brien and choreographer Jerry Mitchell. The production frames the scandalous adventures of Abagnale's life within a 1960's television variety show, as he cons his way to becoming an airline pilot, lawyer and doctor, all while eluding the FBI.
Also on board are the original Hairspray creative team, including scenic designer David Rockwell, costume designer William Ivey Long, lighting designer Kenneth Posner and sound designer Steve Kennedy. Orchestrations are by Shaiman and Larry Blank. Lead producers are Margo Lion and Hal Luftig.
The Broadway production stars Aaron Tveit (Next to Normal, Wicked) as Abagnale Jr., opposite Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Is He Dead?) as FBI Fraud Agent Carl Hanratty. The principal cast also includes Tom Wopat, Kerry Butler, Rachel De Benedet, Linda Hart and Nick Wyman.
Catch Me If You Can received four 2011 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Butz), Best Orchestrations (Shaiman/Blank) and Best Sound Design (Kennedy).
